Jon Reed Goes Off On: Grind

As appeared in &: an extraordinary view in the summer of '93.

Music to Grind Your Mind

Like a fleshy scab that grow back as soon as you try to scratch it off, death metal is thriving. Bands of angry white men with lurid imaginations and bad credit ratings have drawn a loyal underground following into their gory, womanless world.

To the newcomer, death metal (or grindcore) brings a vast, untapped resource of unintentional humor. Groups like Immolation, Autopsy and Pungent Stench all have their creative differences, but they share a charming disdain for the American Top Forty. Incantation, the latest death metal band signed to Relapse/Nuclear Blast Records, have made their name sharing bills with Entombed, Dead Horse, Repulsion, and Suffocation. Suffocation's Human Waste CD is one of many grindcore releases currently available. Deceased's Luck of the Corpse, Defecation's Purity Dilution and Candiru's Unloved and Weeded Out are all guaranteed to decay your interest in mainstream radio.

Back in the day, a successful band needed musical talent, songwriting finesse, or a crotch-grabbing sex symbol with brooding ability. But to join the death metal onslaught, all you need is an anguished scream and a rotting animal carcass for photo shoots. A lousy childhood only betters your chances.
