Jon's said that he doesn't want to influence his web site visitors into liking certain pieces of his work more than others. But in a private moment, Jon said that this poem may be the best thing he's ever written. Ever. And I must say, I can't imagine a better piece of work. And not just because of the subject matter. :)
For me, the most amazing thing about this poem is how it was written. Jon wrote this in a moment of inspiration which he described as feeling like a vehicle for another power. I don't believe he remembers writing it. He certainly doesn't take credit for it.
I witnessed the creation of this poem, and I can say that it was written in one stroke of the pen. It was one motion, complete and fluid and certain.
I scanned in the original document below - written on a Daily Hampshire Gazette envelope of all things - so you could see for yourself. There are no corrections, hesitations or pauses in his writing. One, fluid, inspired motion. I've never witnessed anything like it, nor would I expect to again.
Why I'm Here
by Jon Reed
The first thing
was your laugh. I chased
it, made any joke
possible to get it
to come out, finally
I craved it. I knew
if I heard it enough,
one time I would
catch it and ride
it back to where
it came from.
Wherever it came
from, that's where
I wanted to be. I
only wondered if I'd
ever be able to leave.
